In Allegheny County, individuals involved in a custody dispute are required to attend a mandatory two-part process called Generations. The Generations program is an alternate dispute resolution program that includes an education seminar for adults, an interactive group for children ages six through fifteen, and a mediation session. The adult education seminar of the Generations program offers parents and caregivers the skills to reach their own resolution on custody issues by providing information on topics such as building a co-parenting relationships, communication, and ways to help children cope effectively with their changing family. After the parents/caregivers attend the education seminar, they attend a mediation session which gives them the opportunity to meet with a trained mediator to formulate a custody arrangement.
