Gary Gentile
On this 13th day of September 2016, in the City of Pittsburgh, County of Allegheny, the Executive Committee, Members of Council and the membership of the Allegheny County Bar Association Family Law Section adopt the following resolution in memory of the passing of our esteemed and long-time member, Gary G. Gentile; and
WHEREAS, upon his graduation from Washington and Jefferson College and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, Gary G. Gentile began contributing to the legal profession in Allegheny County by serving as an Assistant Public Defender for Allegheny County, Director of the Juvenile Division of the Public Defender’s office and subsequently as Chief Counsel for the Homicide Division of the Allegheny County Public Defender’s office; and
WHEREAS, during that time, Gary G. Gentile also served the community by acting as a Constitutional Law and Trial Tactics instructor for the City of Pittsburgh Police Academy; and
WHEREAS, Gary G. Gentile also served the people of Allegheny County by serving as Executive Director of the Allegheny County Housing Authority and was, at that time, the youngest Executive Director of a Housing Authority in a major American city; and
WHEREAS, Gary G. Gentile then contributed to the legal profession in Allegheny County and surrounding counties by practicing law with a concentration in Matrimonial Law for the remainder of his legal career; and
WHEREAS, to better represent his clients, Gary G. Gentile became a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers; and
WHEREAS, Gary G. Gentile contributed to the legal profession and to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by serving as Vice Chair of the Domestic Relations Rules Committee of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and as Chair of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Disciplinary Board; and
WHEREAS, Gary G. Gentile contributed to the practice of Family Law in Allegheny County by his service as a member of the Family Law Council of the ACBA, by his chairing the program committee of the Family Law Section of the ACBA and by his attendance, even as he grew ill, of family law section meetings and functions; and
WHEREAS, Gary G. Gentile also contributed to the Allegheny County Bar Association in many ways including by his chairing the Bench Bar Program committee; and
WHEREAS, Gary G. Gentile contributed to the legal profession in Allegheny County by zealously and energetically representing his clients without sacrificing his ability to retain levity and humor even in the most trying of circumstances; and
WHEREAS, Gary G. Gentile contributed to the legal profession in Allegheny County and to that of its members by participating in the private practice of law with many other leading practitioners of family law and in mentoring and training many young lawyers, including both his associates and his opponents who observed his techniques during his long legal career; and
WHEREAS, Gary G. Gentile demonstrated his tenacity, fortitude and a myriad of other personal traits in the way he dealt with his illness and remained an active practitioner of family law, literally until days before his death; and
WHEREAS, Gary G. Gentile passed away on February 28, 2016; and
WHEREAS, the passing of Gary G. Gentile has left an undeniable void and emptiness among those who practiced with and against him in over his long career in Allegheny County.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Allegheny County Bar Association Family Law Section, hereby accepts the foregoing Proclamation and offers its sincere condolences to his widow Jean, his children, Liza, Jordan and Ben, his partners, associates and staff at Gentile, Horoho & Avalli, his entire extended family and all of those who loved Gary.
